River Wharfe and Weir on Wetherby Bridge in 2003. On the left was the site of the old Wharfedale Brewery, it closed during the First World War and was used to provide billets for soldiers. Oxleys mineral water company used the premises, then 1943 when American troops were in the area Coca-Cola was manufactured from concentrate for them. The West Yorkshire Bus Company later used the Brewery offices until the old buildings were demolished and a new bus depot put up on the site. At the river edge was Wetherby Mill. St Joseph's Church on Westgate. Before 1882 there was no Catholic church in Wetherby, a priest from Sicklinghall would conduct Mass in a loft over a local coach house. In May 1882 St Joseph's Church was opened by Bishop Robert Cornthwaite of Leeds. Seen in this view is the extension and replacement church, with the remains of the original church on the right. The new St Joseph's dates from 1986. Photo: Leeds Libraries, www.leodis.net
