1966 is the year in the spotlight with pubs, shops and landmarks all featured in this gallery of memories. They reveal a 12 months of change with large swathes of the town demolished to make way for developments and road widening. The images are published courtesy of the David Atkinson Archive whose collection is housed on photographic archive Leodis, which is run by Leeds Library & Information Service. Long distance view looking across fields towards Morley, taken from Topcliffe Lane in July 1966. This was a time when mill chimneys still dominated the horizon, along with the Town Hall tower in the centre. To the left of the picture is new housing on the Glen estate which would later cover much more of the area. | David Atkinson Archive Photo: David Atkinson Archive

Looking across the pile of rubble from the demolition of the shops at the bottom of Scatcherd Hill to those on the opposite side of the road. Those on the side not being disturbed run from Frank C. Taylor (Stanley Trowsdale's) on the right to Thompson's paper shop, the oldest rows on Scatcherd Hill. Pictured in September 1966. | David Atkinson Archive. Photo: David Atkinson Archive.

Number 37 High Street pictured in July 1966. The back door of the building backs on to High Street, the entrance being to the upper storey. The house is on the schedule of listed buildings for Morley mainly due to its age, the date 1766 appearing on the lintel over the door at the right. This cannot be seen on this image of the 200 year old house because of the soot-blackened lintel over the doorway. | David Atkinson Archive Photo: David Atkinson Archive
