Along Upper Fountaine Street comes a horse and cart for the 'Express Parcel Service' to the right are parked two motorcycles and a car. On the corner of North Street is a large car showroom belonging to Appleyard of Leeds. The store looks fairly new and has a large sign over a new shopfront saying 'Appleyard of Leeds Ltd.' The Lord Mayor, Alderman Hugh Lupton and the Lady Mayoress, Ella Lupton attend the official opening of Kirkstall Abbey House Museum in July 1927. Leeds City Council purchased Abbey House in 1925 from Major Butler for a sum of £6000. Several uses were suggested for the building, including a Judges Lodgings (now located at Carr Manor Meanwood, the former residence of Lord Moynihan) or a Mayoral residence. Finally a decision was made to turn it into a Museum celebrating the history of the people of Leeds. Photo: Thoresby Society
