Developers in 1986 submitted a design for a building mostly made from red brick but Leeds City Council said it wanted to see more stone to break up the brick. It was deemed this would give the building a 'Leeds feel' and help create a kind of architectural bridge between it and the older Edwardian buildings nearby. Councillors said the new design lacked identity and the scheme was rejected. In the end, Schofields - which became the Schofields Centre - traded right up to 1996, after which it became The Headrow Centre.
