It proved be a year of ups and downs for a city and its residents. A miner’s strike meant people were forced to cope with power cuts with many left without electricity for up to nine hours a day. By the middle of the year Leeds was in the mood for a party after United won the FA Cup at Wembley and a new city centre new provided a night to remember for revellers. Enjoy these photos, a mix from the YEP archive and others published courtesy of Leodis, which is run by Leeds Library & Information Service, charting a year in the ;life of your city. Bearded Larry is as much a motor-cycle enthusiast as Linda - although he has a car as well. In addition to visiting clubs at Otley, Pudsey and Leeds, the Morrells regularly travel to Boroughbridge on a Sunday evening, where their close friend, Alan McAvoy runs a club. They have followed the folk scene both as singers and fans. It was at a party following a folk concert that they met about three years ago. Linda is an accomplished guitar and banjo player. Larry, a white-collar worker in the construction industry, rarely sings nowadays, but he travels with Linda on all her club visits. "I have always loved motor-cycles. I don't care if it is unladylike. To experience the wind blowing hard in my face is a great feeling." Photo: YPN

The infectious Oompah atmosphere of the Hofbrauhaus in the Merrion Centre was soon caught by members of Women's Circle and their guests in April 1972. The photo was taken during one of the quieter moments. Pictured, back row from left, are Philip Adams and his wife Janet, Margaret Gledhill and Christine Kilbane.
