They turn back the clock to 1943, a year which featured a herculean fundraising effort by city residents in the summer to provide aeroplanes for the war effort. It was also 12 months which saw the city stage a Festival of Youth and a flag with links to the American War of Independence go on show to the public. These images, a mix from the YEP archive and others published courtesy of Leodis, which is run by Leeds Library & Information Service, chart a year of photo memories. This Wings for Victory exhibition area was located at the bottom of Eastgate. The plane is an Avro Anson, used for training purposes. The Avro factory was close to Yeadon Airport (now Leeds Bradford International Airport) in World War 2 and it was where many Lancaster bombers (of The Dam Busters fame) were built. On the left edge in the centre is a static water tank, constructed for emergency use. The corner of Quarry Hill Flats can be seen immediately above. Buses are on St Peter's Street, the bus station is to the right. Photo: YPN
