14 photo memories of Bramley in 1997
It was the year three decades of rugby league memories were consigned to history.
The diggers were ripping up the pitch in 1997 at McLaren Field, the former home of Bramley RLFC, after the land was sold for housing development. The 'Villagers' had played at the ground since 1965 during which time they won the BBC2 Floodlit Trophy in 1973, the first silverware in their proud history stretching back to 1879. McLaren Field had also been the scene of the club's highest ever win, a 52-17 demolition of Doncaster in a Yorkshire County Cup first round tie in September 1974. They were playing their home games at Headingley. All change of a different kind was played out on national TV for neighbours in Bramley. They agreed to take part in do-it-yourself home improvement show Changing Rooms. Elsewhere Bramley Carnival proved a success and milkmen in LS13 joined the fight against crime.
