Police to remove fake sign warning people to stay away from Leeds coronavirus 'hotspot'

The sign, posted on a wall near The Abbey pub in Bramley, warned people that the area was a "Covid-19 hot spot".

It added: "This towpath is less than two metres wide for long distances.

"Couples, cyclists, runners and pram pushers are putting lives at risk.

"Please think before using this towpath for your daily exercise."

The sign was written in red block capital letters, with a West Yorkshire Police logo at the bottom.

But the force said it had not been produced by them and was likely created by a "well-meaning member of the public."

The Twitter account King of Kirkstall Road posted an image of the sign online, noting that it was "not very official looking".

But they added: "They still however probably make a point worth considering given how narrow the towpath is at many points."

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “We are aware of this sign and will be removing it. We believe it has not been made by anyone working for West Yorkshire Police but instead produced by a well-meaning member of the public.

“We would ask everyone to follow the advice issued by the government and NHS about social distancing and to stay home, protect the NHS and save lives”
