The Doherty family are stuck inside their holiday apartment after Spain declared a state of emergency on Saturday, with cases of coronavirus spiralling to over 11,000 today.

Lewis Doherty, whose dad Paul turns 50 today, said a 'scary' tannoy blasted round the resort on Sunday evening ordering everyone indoors.

Lewis, 28, said: "We got here okay on Saturday, but on Sunday morning we were having breakfast and the police came and just closed it down half way through and told us to leave.

"Then on Sunday night a fire engine went past declaring the state of emergency from a tannoy. It's scary really."

Lewis hopes the family can throw a birthday bash for dad Paul's 50th birthday today, but they face an uncertain journey home.

All Jet2 holidaymakers have been forced to return home after the airline suspended outgoing flights to destinations across Europe, leaving the hotel almost empty.

The Doherty family, who booked flights with Ryan Air on Saturday, hope they can catch their flight as planned.

Lewis added: "We can walk around the hotel but there are no sunbeds out by the pools.

"We've just been drinking on the balcony, there's not really much else you can do.

"Dad is disappointed, he bought a fancy dress outfit for each night out so he's dressing up in the apartment instead!

"We're going to try to have a party today and there is a takeaway dropping off Indian food, so we might have an Indian night.

"It's been an experience that's for sure, but we haven't let it ruin the trip. It's definitely different to what we expected."
