The Sixth Form at Horsforth gears up for open day after ranking top in the city: when is it on, how to reserve a space

On Thursday 19 January 2023, Horsforth School in Leeds will be opening its doors to prospective sixth form students, who will get a chance to speak to subject specialists and see the school’s new £7m sixth form campus (Sixth Form at Horsforth) – a dedicated space for its Year 12 and 13 students to study and relax.

“We are immensely proud of our sixth form, and for good reason,” said Dr. Paul Bell, Headteacher at Horsforth School. “Our students consistently perform above the national average making us one of the most successful sixth forms in the local area – last year 83 per cent of our students went on to higher education, with 43 per cent achieving A and A* grades at A Level.

“In fact, in 2022 we had the best A Level results in the whole of Leeds, and Horsforth has just been named one of the top schools in Yorkshire in The Sunday Times Parent Power Guide.”

According to Oliver Watkins, Director of Sixth Form and Assistant Headteacher, the success of the school’s sixth form is down to the great importance they attach to the relationship students share with both their teachers and tutors, who monitor progress, oversee personal development and prepare them for the next stage of their lives. “All our teachers have a deep love of learning, which they pass on to the students,” he explained.

“The feedback we get from parents is consistently positive and enthusiastic, from the high quality of education to the care and support their children receive.”“The feedback we get from parents is consistently positive and enthusiastic, from the high quality of education to the care and support their children receive.”

Investing in the future

In response to its excellent results and growing student numbers, in 2022 Horsforth opened a brand new sixth form campus. Dr Bell continued, “We felt this was an investment worth making. The new campus has been designed to help students get the most out of their sixth form experience at every level from the modern study spaces with laboratories, IT classrooms, a lecture style auditorium and a state-of-the-art LED screen, to their large new common room with learning pods, a charging station and a café.”

Horsforth MP, Stuart Andrew, attended the opening of the new campus in June 2022, which coincided with an employer engagement event, designed to forge even stronger links with local businesses to offer wider opportunities to the school’s students.

Enriching student lives

With the school’s ever evolving enrichment programme, its sixth form students are offered more than purely academic subjects to keep them busy. Among the 90 activities available to them, they can sign up to a sign language course, study photography, learn first aid, or join the food or debating clubs.

Students also have the opportunity to go on national and international educational trips; in 2022 as part of a cultural and educational exchange, six Year 12 students went to Kyoto, Japan, where they showcased their projects at the ‘Japan Super Science Fair 2022’.

What to expect

On the open evening students and their families will hear from the Sixth Form’s Senior Leadership Team, have the opportunity to chat to Curriculum Leaders about the courses on offer, meet current sixth form students, talk to the school’s Careers Advisor and look around the new campus.

You don’t have to be local

It’s not just students from the immediate Horsforth area in North Leeds who are fortunate enough to be able to attend this top ranking sixth form. A bus service can be organised for students living further south, making this an excellent choice for students across the city.

Dr Bell concluded: “The feedback we get from parents is consistently positive and enthusiastic, from the high quality of education to the care and support their children receive. The school is inclusive and offers opportunities for all. We always look forward to meeting prospective students and showing them everything our school has to offer.

“And whatever their career plan, our students can be confident they will get everything they need to maximise their learning potential and have a great time while doing it.”

The Sixth Form at Horsforth open evening is on Thursday 19th January at 5.30pm. Register or apply for your place at https://www.horsforthschool.org
