“Preparing to begin your secondary school journey is an exciting time!” says Ms Gill, who joined the academy as principal earlier this year.

“At John Smeaton Academy, we recognise the significance of this transition for young people and therefore, we are dedicated to communicating regularly with families and students in the lead up to students joining us in September 2022. We have a whole package of transition activities planned for our students so that they, and their families, feel well-prepared and just as excited about joining us at John Smeaton Academy as we are about meeting them!

“John Smeaton Academy began an extraordinary journey of transformation in September 2021 when it joined The GORSE Academies Trust, one of the highest performing trusts in the country. I am delighted to have been in post as the Principal of John Smeaton Academy since February 2022 to continue the transformation, so that every child within our academy can ‘secure the Gift of Choice’, whereby they are able to choose their next steps at any point in their future with no avenues closed off to them as a result of a poor skillset or qualification suite.

Enrichment

“Alongside academic success, we place great emphasis on students’ experiences through our ‘Enrichment++’ programme, recognising that students’ opportunities outside of the taught curriculum have a significant impact on their enjoyment of school and their development as young adults. We go beyond the norm and offer extra-curricular clubs that you may have previously viewed as being the domain of the independent school sector. As an example, our rowing and Mandarin programmes are receiving national attention for all the right reasons. Developing the whole child over the course of their five years with us is central to all of our decision making and has been throughout my years of leadership within schools across the Leeds city region.

“My enthusiasm and commitment to educating young people has been unwavering since I began my career in education as a Mathematics Teacher. Since then, I have been influential in improving the quality of education for young people in leadership roles across the city, including most notably at The Farnley Academy and Bruntcliffe Academy. I feel passionately that every child within Leeds should experience a safe, welcoming and exceptional high-quality school experience and I am dedicated to ensuring that students at John Smeaton Academy have this experience every day.

“If your child is joining us in September 2022, we are really looking forward to meeting them at their primary school and at John Smeaton Academy in the summer term. If you are interested in your child gaining a place for September 2022 or September 2023 then please get in contact to arrange a tour via email at [email protected].”
