Sewtec Automation is to create 70 new jobs after investing £2m in relocating its entire operations from eight separate sites into a single 75,000 sq ft design and manufacturing building.

The Wakefield-based industrial automation systems firm, which employs more than 110 people, was classified as an essential manufacturer early in the pandemic, which enabled operations to continue but created challenges for moving sites.

The firm said it achieved £23m of turnover and an EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortisation) of £7.4m for the financial year to June 30, 2020, despite some customers delaying order placements.

This compared to £28.7m turnover and £9m for the previous year.

Exports continue to dominate with 80 per cent of systems delivered international customers, including Tata, Huhtamaki, Nestle, Greencore and Imperial Brands.

Sewtec said it has a strong order book and pipeline of opportunities in its core markets of medical and pharmaceuticals, food and drink, personal care, pet food and track and trace applications.

Managing director Mark Cook, said: “Whilst the pandemic has created a uniquely challenging environment for manufacturers worldwide, it was essential to implement our relocation plans. This enabled us to bring our staff together under one roof.
