Plans for new technology at waste plants could create 45 new jobs
Residents can have their say
Plans for new carbon capture technology at the Enfinium Ferrybridge site could lead to the creation of approximately 45 permanent jobs.
The company has launched a public consultation, inviting residents to provide feedback on the proposals.
The project aims to extract carbon dioxide from gases produced during the incineration of residual waste – the rubbish remaining after recycling and other sorting processes. This captured gas would then be prepared for transport and sent for permanent underground storage.

Mike Maudsley, chief executive of Enfinium, highlighted the dual benefits of the initiative. He stated: “To achieve net zero, the UK needs practical solutions that can deliver carbon removals at scale while continuing to manage the unrecyclable waste our society produces. Carbon capture at Ferrybridge represents an important opportunity to do both.”
Mr Maudsley added that the proposals could enable the capture of at least 1.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, while also supporting several hundred jobs during the construction phase and creating around 45 additional permanent roles once operational.
He encouraged public participation, saying: “I’d encourage people to take a look at the information we have published, come along to one of our consultation events, ask us questions and tell us what they think.”
The two existing plants at Ferrybridge currently process approximately 1.45 million tonnes of residual waste each year, generating a combined 170MW of electricity.
The consultation period for Enfinium’s plans is open until Wednesday, December 9. Residents can participate in an online webinar scheduled for Monday, November 16, from 6pm to 7pm via Zoom. An in-person drop-in event will also be held at Ferrybridge Community Centre, The Square, Knottingley, on Saturday, November 21, between 9am and 1pm.
Further details on the proposals and an opportunity to submit feedback are available online at www.enfiniumferrybridge.co.uk. Responses can also be sent via email to [email protected] or by post to FREEPOST ENFINIUM DECARBONISATION.
