"No replacement" - Daniel Farke declaration on Leeds United win v Tottenham and Gabi Gudmundsson injury update
Boss Daniel Farke on Leeds United’s win against Tottenham and a Gabi Gudmundsson injury update.
Whites boss Daniel Farke saluted a relentless display from his Leeds United team en-route to victory against Tottenham Hotspur as he also provided a Gabi Gudmundsson injury update and praise for his replacement.
Farke’s side went into Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off against Spurs having gone five games without a victory and facing a Tottenham side who had won three games in a row but Noah Okafor’s 79th-minute strike sealed a 1-0 success.
Leeds dominated after the break following a goalless first half after which Farke made a big change during the interval as first choice left back Gabi Gudmundsson was replaced by Melvin Bard.
Bard had not featured since getting 18 minutes off the bench in September’s 4-1 win at home to Newcastle United but the Frenchman immediately impressed en route to helping his side to a 1-0 success.
Speaking post match, Farke revealed that Gudmundsson had suffered a hamstring injury but revealed his hope that the Swede would be back after the November international break.
Farke, though, said he had a feeling Bard would shine if called upon after impressing in training as he also saluted the overall display of his team and “no replacement” of the feeling of returning to winning ways.
Speaking post match, Farke said: “There's no replacement for this winning feeling after such a game in the dressing room.
"It's great to have this winning feeling back. All the credit and all my compliments go to the boy's, a terrific performance against a really in form Tottenham side.
"You could see in the first half that they would go with confidence also until this game.
"For us of course a difficult period because we're missing since a few weeks more less and training and also in the starting line-ups keep players like Anton Stach, Noah Okafor and Dominic not the easiest spell with several injury problems.
"It was important today to show this unity and commitment and be tactically spot on in order to avoid all their processes and all of their individual quality in order to score goals and reduce them to very, very little already in the first half.
"We were missing a bit in our game and final third the quality of the cross and the finishing pass perhaps not there.
"But I think in the second half there was no doubt just one team was pushing for this win.
"We missed before sadly too many chances, Ao Tanaka for example with a great chance, but it felt like it's coming, we were relentless today and we kept going and then also fully deserved to go int the lead.
"Of course in the last moments of the game, you have to dig in, and when they throw everything at you, and they can substitute quality players in and they take lots of risk and you have to dig in and have to defend and show unity, we showed the steel again, another clean sheet, another terrific defensive behaviour, but overall, a very, very good team performance, and for that good that we have this winning feeling back and credit to the boys.
"They were outstanding today."
Asked for an update on Gudmundsson and what he thought about the display of Bard, Farke said: “Gabi had problems with his hamstring, so it was not possible for him to keep going. I always prefer to have Gabi available, don't get me wrong.
"But I had a good feeling straight away because Melvin had his best week in training since he was together with us. He could feel that he has momentum and I was not one moment concerned when I had to throw him in.
"Of course it's difficult to come in in such a game more less after not being involved for too much, but I would agree a very competitive performance, very concentrated, but it's also no coincidence.
"I'm a big believer in you play like you train and I had a really good feeling during this training week with him.
"Nevertheless, I hope that it's not too bad with Gabi and hope to have him back on the other side of the international break, but also credit for Melvin.
"I think he also played his part in our really, really good second half."
