From Mexican grub and cocktails at Neon Cactus to fighting to get to the bar at Call Lane Social and dancing the night away in Jake’s Bar, the street boasts some of the best bars in the city – and I inevitably end up there at least once a month. It’s Leeds’ best party street (IMHO) and despite the knockbacks of Covid, the venues are thriving.
Here is my ultimate guide to a night out on Call Lane, with 20 bars and restaurants to choose from – and I’ve been to them all.
13. The Maven
The Maven is a 1920's inspired speakeasy on Number 1 Call Lane, once a hidden gem and now Leeds' worst kept secret. In the day, it's an intimate venue for a cocktail with friends and it comes alive at night with live DJs. The decor is stunning. Photo: Steve Riding
14. Red's True BBQ
We've looped back onto the heart of Call Lane and first up on this side of the road is American-style restaurant Red's True Barbeque, serving prime cuts smoked low and slow. It's a meat-eaters paradise but there are little plates to share and veggie options, too. Photo: Steve Riding
15. Jake's Bar and Still Room
There's often queues to get into Jake's Bar on a Saturday night, but it's absolutely worth the little wait. This award-winning underground cocktail bar plays R&B and hip hop classics and boasts a fantastic cocktail menu. They also produce their own spirits, liqueurs and distillates. Photo: Steve Riding
16. Oporto
As well as promising a proper good time every night of the week, Oporto hosts a line-up of brilliant live music in an intimate gig space. Photo: Steve Riding
17. Neon Cactus
If the night calls for tequila, head to Neon Cactus - Call Lane's Mexican-inspired bar and eatery. The food is really good, with loaded nachos, burritos, tacos and fried chicken wings, and don't leave without trying their margaritas. Photo: Steve Riding
18. Cuckoo
Cuckoo is unashamedly cheesy and the pop bangers are guaranteed to get you dancing. There's five spaces which can be booked out, as well as a rooftop terrace, pizzas and bottomless brunch. Photo: Steve Riding
