Kelsey Grammer is set to reprise his role as Frasier Crane in a TV reboot of the popular ‘90s spin-off of the US sitcom Cheers.

Frasier saw Grammer’s character return to Seattle to take care of his elderly father after years in Boston where he would attend the Cheers watering hole.

Cheers ran for 11 seasons, mainly through the ‘80s, amassing 275 episodes and launching the careers of Ted Danson, Woody Harrelson and Grammer.

And, as Grammer looks set to step foot in the character of Frasier, viewers are wondering what happened to the rest of the cast from Cheers.

Where was Cheers filmed?

As the intro to the show tells us, Cheers was “filmed before a live studio audience” on a Paramount Stage in Hollywood - far away from Boston where the programme was set.

The famous establishing shot of the outside of the bar is of the Bull & Finch Pub located at 84 Beacon Street across from Boston Public Garden, in Massachusetts.

It’s a real pub that serves alcohol and attracts millions of tourists every year, though the interior looks very different to what fans of the show might expect.

There is Cheers memorabilia around the pub and even a gift shop on the premises which has been renamed Cheers Beacon Hill due to its longstanding association with the show.

Who was in the Cheers cast?

Cheers starred Ted Danson as Sam Malone, Shelley Long as Diane Chambers, Nicholas Colasanto as Coach Ernie Pantusso, Rhea Perlman as Carla Tortelli, George Wendt as Norm Peterson, John Ratzenberger as Cliff Clavin, Kelsey Grammer as Frasier Crane, Woody Harrelson as Woody Boyd, Bebe Neuwirth as Lilith Sternin and Kirstie Alley as Rebecca Howe.

Where are the Cheers cast now?

Danson has featured in a host of movies and shows since Cheers aired, including Three Men and a Baby, Becker, The Good Place and most recently the 2021 series Mr Mayor.

After leaving Cheers, Long dotted around the TV scene after films Hello Again and Troop Beverly Hills, featuring in Frasier and recently Modern Family until the show ended in 2018.

Cheers was Colasanto's last work as he died of a heart attack in 1985. Among his list of credits includes a role alongside Robert De Niro in Raging Bull, in which he played Tommy Como.

Like Danson, Perlman featured throughout Cheers' run. She went on to feature in films Matilda, Canadian Bacon and more recently Marvelous and the Black Hole.

Wendt went on to have a TV series of his own and also featured in The Naked Truth and Modern Men and directed the Spice Girls Movie. In 2020, he had a role in Stealing a Survivor.

Ratzenberger went on to voice many roles in Toy Story, The Incredibles, Wall-E, among others, and most recently appeared in the TV show Monsters at Work (2021).

Harrelson has starred in an abundance of Hollywood blockbusters including No Country for Old Men, The Hunger Games, Now You See Me, and is lined up for more in 2021, including the TV series The Most Dangerous Man in America.

Alley is known for her part in the films Drop Dead Gorgeous, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Look Who's Talking. She most recently had a role in The Goldbergs in 2019.

Will there be a Cheers reunion?

Despite the show's popularity, Cheers hasn't been rebooted in the same way fans can expect Frasier to return to their screens, but the cast members have met up on several occasions over the years.

In 2020, Danson and his former Cheers cast members held a virtual reunion to reconnect, share memories and tell stories from their working days together, as well as raise money for charity in the Covid pandemic.

The cast has got together for anniversary parties and dinners for notable milestones of the hit show, made special appearances on other programmes like The Simpsons and characters have featured in the Frasier spin-off.

Is Cheers on Netflix?

Cheers is not on Netflix for UK subscribers but is available on Amazon Prime Video at a cost of £1.89 per episode, as well as YouTube and Google Play for a cost of £1.99 per episode.

It is also on Channel 4 each weekday morning between 7am and 8am. It can be viewed on the channel’s digital platform All4 as well as the +1 function for later risers.
