US comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine has announced its eighth season will be the show's last.

The programme, created by Dan Goor and Michael Schur, was first released in 2013 and stars Andy Samberg and Melissa Fumero as police officers.

Set in Brooklyn's fictional 99th district, the show follows the adventures of Samberg's character Jake Peralta - a talented but immature NYPD detective.

Is Brooklyn Nine-Nine cancelled?

The programme's co-creator Dan Goor confirmed the eighth season will conclude the hit TV show's series "to honour the characters, the story and viewers".

Goor said on Instagram: "I'm so thankful to NBC and Universal Television for allowing us to give these characters and our fans the ending they deserve.

"I feel very lucky to have worked with this amazing cast and crew for eight seasons.

"They are not only among the most talented people in the business, they are all good human beings who have become a family.

"But most of all, I feel lucky that we have had the best fans in the world.

"Fans who literally saved us from cancellation. Fans who fill us with joy.

"Ending the show was a difficult decision, but ultimately, we felt it was the best way to honour the characters, the story and our viewers.

"I know some people will be disappointed it's ending so soon, but honestly, I'm grateful it lasted this long. Title of my sex tape."

When will season 8 air?

The eighth season is currently in production.

The first episodes of the eighth season would have been aired by now if it were not for delays due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The series will now air in 2021.

The first five seasons aired mid-late September, which could offer an insight as to when season eight could hit our screens.

Seasons six and seven were released in January 2019 and February 2020 respectively.
