Housebuilder supports work of Wakefield community food pantry

Taylor Wimpey Yorkshire has donated £250 and much-needed essentials to a Wakefield-based food project which supports local people in crisis by providing emergency provisions.

The donation to the Community Pantry at St Swithun’s Community Centre is part of a national initiative by Taylor Wimpey to support food banks across the UK who may experience a spike in demand during the school holidays.

The Community Pantry is a volunteer-led food support service designed to provide emergency food parcels, groceries and essential household items to individuals and families in the Eastmoor area of the city.

The team at Taylor Wimpey Yorkshire set up food collection points at its Head Office and at its Wakefield development, Newland Grange, in Neil Fox Way.

Katy Frost, spokesperson for the Community Pantry, said: “A lot of people come to us for emergency food parcels so any support we can get in providing staple provisions, such as tinned goods, cereals and long life milk is very much appreciated.

"We often see demand increase during the summer holidays so on behalf of our staff and volunteers we want to say a big thank you to Taylor Wimpey for its generous support of our work. It really will make a difference to so many people.”

The Community Pantry operates with a dual purpose of supporting people facing financial hardship and reducing environmental food waste.

It operates out of St Swithun’s Community Centre, in Arncliffe Road, which serves as a local hub hosting various services including the community pantry,

Citizens Advice sessions, and regular coffee mornings. St Swithuns’ Community Centre is managed by the Eastmoor Community Project Ltd and is a registered charity.

Sam Evans, Sales and Marketing Director at Taylor Wimpey Yorkshire, said: “We’re committed to giving back to the communities in which we build and we were pleased to be able to offer this donation to the Community Pantry, which is run by an amazing group of people who support those in need. We hope our donation helps them continue their vital services.”

Taylor Wimpey Yorkshire is currently building in Wakefield at Newland Grange, delivering a mix of three- and four-bedroom properties, including 41 homes designated as affordable housing.
