Leeds Night Light 2020: First pictures and video of laser beams lighting up night sky

Laser Light City will give Leeds residents all across the city the opportunity to see the spectacular lights show from a safe distance.

The people of Leeds will get the chance to take control of the pattern and colour of the crisscrossing beams of light that will shine from the rooftops of seven buildings.

The show will be visible for miles, as well as being available to watch over live stream, using a smartphone or a tablet, from the comfort of your own home.

Light Night Leeds events will begin with Laser Light City on October 22-24 from 6pm until 11pm

Laser Light City was created by BAFTA-winning artist Seb Lee, and Light Night Leeds will also include two new semi-permanent light artworks in the waterfront area, which will reflect the experiences of 2020.

The message ‘I MISS YOU’, by Romanian artists Daisler Association, will also be installed in Leeds Dock in October, to represent everything that was missed this year due to the pandemic.

In November there will also be a large rainbow, GLORY, made by local young people and Wakefield-based Neon Workshops. It will be installed on Water Lane, and the symbol will be

representative of the thanks we give to the NHS and other key workers during the pandemic.

The British Library have also commissioned a new online digital artwork, Faint Signals, by Invisible Flock. Set in an imagined Yorkshire landscape and using the Library’s vast archive of digitised nature sounds, the work will launch online on Tuesday, November 10.

The coronavirus restrictions have meant that the usual budget has been reduced, which has meant the festival has had to adapt.

Light Night Leeds has been running for 15 years, however this year the Council are not encouraging people to travel into the city centre or specific spaces in large groups, but enjoy the lights from a distance or even from home.
