Days Out: Mother Shipton's Cave

Feel enchanted this summer at Mother Shipton's Cave in Knaresborough, one of England's oldest attractions.

Over the last four centuries, millions of visitors from all over the world have been charmed by the park’s natural beauty, mesmerised by the petrifying well and fascinated by the story of Old Mother Shipton, England’s most famous prophetess.

Old Mother Shipton dwelled in the cave and was said to have foretold scarily accurate prophecies about the world - including the Great Fire of London in 1666 and the invention of the internet.

Families can also discover the wishing well and the geological phenomenon of the petrifying well where everyday items such as shoes and teddy bears have been turned to stone by the magical waters.

All these marvels and more can be enjoyed as visitors walk along the woodland path that winds alongside the river and through the unique, unspoilt remnant of the Royal Forest of Knaresborough which provides the ideal backdrop to a fantastic day out for all the family.

There are three picnic areas and two children’s play areas, one of which is a brand-new adventure playground.

Until the end of August, Robin Hood, Maid Marion and the villainous Sheriff of Nottingham will be amongst the characters bringing the legend alive throughout the park.
