Days out: Brimham Rocks, Nidderdale

Spread over 50 acres of spectacular moorland, the National Trust owned site is home to some of the most dramatic rock formations in the country.

Standing at a height of around 30ft, the unusual rocks are around 320 million years old and came about through glaciation and erosion of the area’s millstone grit.

Over time, nature has carved the rocks into weird and wonderful shapes which now carry names like the Dancing Bear, the Gorilla and the Anvil and offer breathtaking views of the surrounding Nidderdale countryside.

The site is a natural playground for both serious rock climbers and inquisitive families, and is the perfect location for letting off a bit of steam. Dogs are also welcome, but must be kept on a lead from the beginning of March until the end of September.

There’s also a shop selling locally sourced produce, including honey, jams and preserves, and crafts and gifts, and a café kiosk where you can warm up with a delicious pie and cup of Yorkshire Tea.

To celebrate this year’s Tour de Yorkshire, which will see riders will breeze past the site during the first stage from Beverley to Settle, Brimham Rocks is inviting camper van owners to get front row seats and set up camp at the site on April 28 and 29 for £20.
