Leeds bar and club Canal Mills given six more months before it closes forever

The popular nightclub Canal Mills, which was due to close on New Year's Day, will now stay open for another six months.

The historic textile mill, which operates as a music and arts venue, will stay open until June next year after negotiating a lease extension with their landlords.

Back in August, bosses announced on Facebook that the Brandon Street venue in Armley would close on Tuesday, January 1 2019.

This was due to the redevelopment of the Canal Mills Estate, which submitted plans to Leeds City Council to turn the Grade II-listed building into apartments.However, the club's landlord has extended the lease until June while plans for the redevelopment are finalised.

The New Year's Eve and New Year's Day events had been promoted as being the last big nights.

The NYE event details read: "After six incredible years, Canal Mills will close its doors for one final time for the final time on the 01.01.2019. Locking behind it over half a decade of unforgettable moments and memories…"

However, Mark Newton, Director of Canal Mills, confirmed that they will now hold events throughout 2019.

This includes the popular Garden Parties events which take place on the May Bank Holiday and their annual craft beer festivals.

Mr Newton said: "We are really happen to announce this extension to the Canal Mills lease which will allow us to hold events in the space up until summer.

"We have some very special shows to announce alongside the return of the hugely successful Garden Parties which will take place on the May Bank Holiday weekends."

The closing new year parties will still take place with Disciples, Danny Howard, Waze & Odyssey on December 31 and Gerd Jansen, Paul Woolford, PBR Streetgang and others on New Year’s Day.

The group still intend to open up a new venue but have pushed the date back to the autumn 2019.
