Built over 130 years ago by renowned theatre architect Frank Matcham, Theatre Royal Wakefield has been at the heart of the community for generations.

As the theatre looks ahead to plans that will help preserve this historic building for future generations, Heritage Open Day provides a chance to discover and celebrate its remarkable history.

Visitors can explore a special archival installation in the Walker Studio and share their own memories of the venue.

Alongside celebrating our rich history, we're inviting visitors to take a look at an exciting vision for the Theatre's future.

Explore proposed designs, architectural drawings and visualisations throughout the building, and see how these ambitious plans could enhance the experience for audiences, artists and our community.

Families can also enjoy a series of children's activities, including theatre set design competitions and an exciting detective trail, all with exclusive prizes.

Alongside the free activities, visitors can book a place on one of the theatre's popular behind-the-scenes tours.

Guests will have the opportunity to explore areas not usually open to the public, spend time on the stage, and uncover fascinating stories from more than 130 years of theatre history. Spaces on the tours are limited and advance booking is necessary.

Speaking about the event, Sarah Shooter, Director of Patron Experience said: "Heritage Open Day is a wonderful opportunity for people to discover more about the history of Theatre Royal Wakefield and the role it has played in our community.

"We're proud of our heritage, but we're equally excited about our plans to preserve this remarkable building for future generations. We look forward to welcoming visitors through our doors to explore, reflect and share their own memories of the theatre.”
