Days Out: Roseberry Topping, North Yorkshire

After hibernating all winter, it’s time to brush those cobwebs off your walking boots, pack a picnic, grab the dog (or failing that the kids and failing that just a hat) and get outside in the great outdoors.

As Cleveland’s most iconic hill, Roseberry Topping is an ideal walk for all the family – there’s handy parking, it’s not too strenuous and you’re rewarded with spectacular views from the summit.

Start your walk in Newton Wood and marvel at the blanket of bluebells before making your ascent up towards the summit and following in the footsteps of a young Captain James Cook who spent many hours walking in the area.

It is among the most beautiful spots in the country.

Also known as the Yorkshire Matterhorn, Roseberry Topping offers some of the best uninterrupted views over Teesside and the North Sea, all the way over to the Vale of York – the perfect reward for your efforts.

After scaling the Topping, there is a chance to refuel at the Kings Head Inn in the picture-postcard village of Newton under Roseberry, where you can enjoy a pint of Black Sheep beer while looking out over the hill.
