After weeks of speculation and anticipation, the race for the Christmas Number 1 is almost over. This year’s festive chart-topper will be revealed in just a matter of hours.
Kylie Minogue, RAYE, and even Taylor Swift are among the contenders to claim the converted spot in 2025. Wham!’s Last Christmas topped the charts before Xmas in 2023 and 2024.
With less than a week to go before the big day, this weekend marks the last UK chart before December 25. But when will we find out who is the Christmas Number 1 for this year?
Who are the contenders for Christmas Number 1?
According to the Official UK chart’s own website, the main runners-and-riders for this year’s race include Kylie Minogue, RAYE, Olivia Dean, and Taylor Swift. Out of the contenders, Kylie is the one with the most overtly festive song - with her track Xmas.
Kylie is the favourite with the bookies, with Oddschecker having her surging to 2/9 this week. But will there be a surprise?
How is the Christmas Number 1 decided?
On its website, The Official Chart explains: “The only chart that counts, The Official Chart is compiled by the Official Charts Company on behalf of the British music industry.
“First established in 1952, the Official Chart today surveys over 8,000 retailers and digital services daily to count UK physical sales, digital downloads, audio streams and video streams. The most comprehensive research panel of its kind, it captures 99.9% of the total UK singles market.”
The very first Christmas number 1 went to Al Martino for his track Here in My Heart. In more recent times, LadBaby dominated from 2018 to 2022, while Wham! secured the spot in 2023 and 2024.
When is the 2025 Christmas Number 1 announced?
Santa might still be finishing up his preparations at the North Pole, but the wait for the Christmas Number 1 is almost over. The track that has secured the spot for 2025 will be revealed in just a few hours.
The full Christmas Top 40 will be counted down on BBC Radio 1's The Official Chart with Jack Saunders from 3pm today (December 19). The top 100 will also be published on the Official Charts website at 5.45pm.
