Viewers of BBC Breakfast and Strictly Come Dancing have been left confused after presenters of both shows wore all black.

Judges on Strictly Come Dancing also wore all black, leading some viewers to questions whether it was a conscious decision.

The universal wearing of black is typically reserved for sombre occasions leading some to suggest that presenters were paying respects to a person or marking an event.

Others suggested that the BBC presenters may be wearing black in a show of solidarity with the theatre industry which is on its knees due to the coronavirus induced social distancing measures.The BBC have since clarified the outfit choice of their staff.

Who wore black?

Strictly Come Dancing presenters Claudia Winkelman and Tess Daly both opted for black on the results show this Sunday. They weren't alone with judges Bruno Tonioli, Shirley Ballas, Motsi Mabuse and Craig Revel Horwood all wearing black.

On Tuesday morning Dan Walker and Sally Nugent both opted for the colour.

A BBC spokesperson clarified why presenters of Breakfast and presenters and judges of Strictly Come Dancing wore black.

Despite the theories presented by viewers, the wearing of black appears to be complete coincidence.

A spokesperson said: “there’s nothing going on, it’s just pure coincidence.”

The comment extinguishes the theory that the outfit choice was in solidarity with UK theatres.

One Tweeter had said: “all three judges and the two presenters all in black tonight, is this a nod to theatres being dark?"

What happened in week 7 of Strictly?

Strictly celebrated musicals in Week 7, with one couple booted off a week before the semi-finals.

JJ Chalmers and partner Amy Dowden lost in a dance-off, with Jamie Laing and Karen Hauer narrowly avoiding the boot.

Dowden celebrated her partner, posting on Instagram: "Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I know you and your beautiful family will always be in my life and this is just the start of a lovely friendship! Thank you JJ!!!
