It was the night many WWE fans had been waiting for - a tight embrace between Christian and Edge as the two wrestlers made unforgettable comebacks.

But that was about as brotherly as it got, as the best and first man were left standing at the end of an outrageously entertaining night of eliminations.

What is the Royal Rumble?

The WWE professional wrestling event is based on the classic Battle Royale match, where 30 wrestlers fight it out to be crowned the winner.

It began in 1988 and this year, took place in Tampa, Florida.

The wrestlers are split into male and female, with one of each being crowned the winners.

One wrestler will enter the ring with the objective of throwing the second wrestler over the top rope, with both feet hitting the floor.

Several wrestlers can be in the ring at one time, with each battling until a clear winner has been identified.

The Royal Rumble marks the road to the annual main show, WrestleMania.

“Stone Cold” Steve Austin holds the record for the most Royal Rumble wins - taking top spot three times (1997, 1998, 2001).

Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Batista, John Cena and Randy Orton have all won the eliminator twice.

Who won the Royal Rumble Men’s eliminator in 2021?

On 31 January, Edge took down all 29 other wrestlers to be crowned the winner.

Despite being out with an injury since the Backlash event in May 2020, he started as number one and fought his way through every single opponent.

This achievement has only been reached twice before him, by Sean Michaels in 1995 and Chris Benoit in 2004.

Edge entered the ring followed by Randy Orton. The fight has left many expecting Orton to win another championship between now and ‘Mania, in order to rematch with Edge.

The pair battled it out until Edge appeared to clinch victory by slamming Orton with a chair behind his leg - causing Orton’s team to determine that he could no longer fight as he couldn’t walk.

It all appeared to be over for Orton, with Seth Rollins battling it out with Edge. Then, Orton emerged from nowhere and tackled Edge with his signature move - the RKO.

He then picked Edge up and attempted to throw him over the rope, but Edge countered and it was Orton who found himself out of the ring and out of the tournament.

No one could outperform Edge and for that he has secured a spot at WrestleMania.

The night did not disappoint, though the absence of a crowd due to coronavirus was blamed for the seemingly anticlimactic return of Rollins, and even more surprisingly, Christian.

The return of Christian was a moment no one expected from the wrestlers at the Royal Rumble, as he embraced Edge in a brotherly hug (the pair have been known to act as brothers in the past, and are extremely good friends outside of the ring).

Who won the Royal Rumble Women’s eliminator?

Bianca Belair won the women’s leg of the show - entering third and withstanding some fierce and jaw-dropping stunts.

Rhea Ripley and Belair tag teamed on Charlotte Flair in the final three showdown, before the fight finally came to an end with Belair the worthy winner.

Billie Kay and Jillian Hall also teamed up, after Kay spent her entrance lingering around the announcer’s table waiting for a mate. The tag team only lasted for seven minutes, before Hall eliminated Kay.

In the Smackdown Women’s Championship, Carmella and Sasha Banks also battled it out in a retake of Carmella’s performance in December - but it was Banks who served Carmella her Banks Statement and took the win.

Biana Belair has now secured her spot at WrestleMania.

The move from California to Tampa has come because governors in California are unwilling to allow fans to attend. The show was supposed to be held in Tampa last year but was also moved due to the Covid pandemic.
