Who won I’m a Celebrity 2020? This year’s winner, voting figures - and when Coming Out Show is on ITV

I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! came to an end on Friday, 4 December- or so you thought.

ITV has confirmed that, despite lockdown across the UK leaving an afterparty out of the question, the annual ‘Coming Out Show’ will go ahead.

So who won the 20th series of I’m a Celeb, and what can we expect from the show in the future? Here is what you need to know.

Who was eliminated first?

Evictions began on 27 November and soon intensified, with double evictions taking place from 30 November.

The 2020 series featured 12 celebrities, ranging from Soap stars to Olympic gold medalists.

The evicted campmates were:

Paralympian Hollie Arnold MBE - 27 November

Broadway performer Ruthie Henshall - 29 November

Corrie’s Beverley Callard and journalist Victoria Derbyshire - 30 November

Tenor Russell Watson and actress Jessica Plummer - 1 December

Olympian Sir Mo Farah and Strictly dancer AJ Pritchard - 2 December

Eastenders actor Shane Richie - 3 December

Presenter Vernon Kay and DJ Jordan North - 4 December

Who won I’m a Celebrity?

Radio 1 DJ Jordan North, TV presenter Vernon Kay and podcaster and author Giovanna Fletcher were the three remaining contestants battling it out at Gwrych Castle in the final.

While North had raced into the lead as the viewers’ favourite in the second episode, he was neck and neck with dark horse and ‘Mamma Gi of the camp’ Giovanna Fletcher going into Friday’s final, according to bookies’ odds.

However, North missed out on the crown in the end, with Fletcher being named winner.

Gi was crowned by fellow contestant and third-place runner up, Vernon Kay, as presenters Ant and Dec remained at a metre’s distance from the finalists.

The wife of McFly’s Tom Fletcher was speechless as she gasped in amazement when Dec announced the new ‘Queen of the Castle’.

She commented: "I can't believe it, people have actually picked up their phones and voted.”

What were this year’s voting and viewing figures?

A record-breaking 12 million votes were cast before Fletcher was crowned the winner.

Vernon managed to win 26.5% of the vote when it was split between the trio, however it was Giovanna who managed to win over the highest percentage of the audience – getting 50.27% of the vote, narrowly above Jordan's 49.73%.

However, this is one million more than the 2019 finale received, when 11 million votes were cast.

Despite a change of scenery for the 20th series - moving from Australia to Wales and a jungle to a castle - the gamble was well worth it for host channel ITV.

A whopping 10.2 million viewers tuned in to watch the opening night on 15 November, the show’s highest rating since the 2018 final.

I’m a Celeb’s popularity persisted and culminated in 10.7 million viewers watching the final,9.7 million of whom watched live.

This was over 600,000 more than Ant and Dec attracted to the jungle in the 2019 finale.

And, with lockdown measures resulting in most people across the UK staying home in the evenings, I’m a Celeb kept the nation ticking over as the most-watched non-news programme of 2020 with its biggest ever 16-to-34-year-old audience.

When is The Coming Out Show?

This year’s after-the-show-has-ended show - usually referred to as The Coming Out Show, will be called ‘I’m a Celebrity… A Castle Story.’

It’s usually filmed in the hotel and after party in Australia to give fans a look at how each of the 12 participating celebs react when they are reunited with their loved ones in civilisation.

However, 2020’s show will be considerably different.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the show will feature highlights from the castle and interviews with each celeb, though it is not thought that the celebs will reunite, and interviews are more likely to happen on a one-to-one level with Ant and Dec.

I’m a Celebrity… A Castle Story will air on ITV on Sunday, 13 December at 8pm.

Will the show return to Australia in 2021?

While Gwrych Castle in North Wales was a replacement venue due to coronavirus travel restrictions, the castle setting has been a winner with viewers.

Although it is thought that the show will return to the original jungle next year, producers have not ruled out a UK-based castle series either.

Executive Producer Richard Cowles said: “Australia has been I’m A Celebrity’s natural home and the Welsh version was born out of necessity rather than choice, but we’ve learned a lot and so maybe there is a UK incarnation of the show.

“We will look at what being in Wales means for the format going forward. Is it something we would want to do again, or do we want to return to Australia?”

He also hinted that there could be various versions of the show, created across the next year.

One thing seems certain, the show is going from strength to strength as it enters its third decade on our screens.

There is no speculation that it won't be back next year.

Ant and Dec warned evicted celebrities from the 2020 lineup not to “put other celebs off for next year” by giving away too much about the difficulty of the legendary Bushtucker trials.
