The Undoing: cast and release date of new Sky Atlantic series starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant

A new drama on Sky Atlantic looks is serving up some Big Little Lies-style thrills.

The Undoing stars Hugh Grant alongside Big Little Lies star Nicole Kidman. The creator of Big Little Lies, David E. Kelly, also serves as writer and producer on the new series.

What is The Undoing about?

Based on the 2014 novel You Should Have Known by Jean Hanff Korelitz, The Undoing follows married couple Grace and Jonathan Fraser.

Grace is living the only life she ever wanted for herself, a successful therapist on the brink of publishing her first book, with a devoted husband and a young son who attends an elite private school in New York City.

But “weeks before her book is due to be published" says the show’s synopsis, “a chasm opens in her life; a violent death, a missing husband and in the place of a man Grace thought she knew, only a chain of terrible revelations.

“Left behind in the wake of a spreading and very public disaster, and horrified by the ways in which she has failed to heed her own advice, Grace must dismantle one life and create another for her child and herself.”

Who stars in it?

The two stars of the show are Hollywood stars Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant, who play The Undoing’s central couple.

“David has created another propulsive series with a fascinating, complicated female role at its centre,” said Kidman. “I’m excited and honored to continue collaborating with HBO and David E Kelley.”

Sharing the screen with them is Édgar Ramírez (American Crime Story) as Detective Joe Mendoza, Noah Jupe (A Quiet Place) as the Frasers’ son Henry, and Lily Rabe (American Horror Story).

Noma Dumezweni (Black Earth Rising) plays Haley Fitzgerald, while The Killing's Sofie Gråbøl is Catherine Stamper and Italian actress Matilda De Angelis is Elena Alves.

The cast also includes Ismael Cruz Cordova (Berlin Station), Michael Devine (Limitless) and Donald Sutherland (Trust).

Who’s directing it?

All six episodes are directed by Susanne Bier, from Denmark. She was the first female director to win a Golden Globe and an Emmy Award, Netflix’s 2018 post-apocalyptic horror Bird Box.

The Undoing is written and produced by David E. Kelly, who created Big Little Lies in which Kidman also starred.

“I loved this book,” said Kelley, “A character driven psychological thriller, I’m excited about the adaptation and thrilled to be able to do it with Nicole and HBO.”

When can I watch it?

The show was originally scheduled to debut in May 2020, but was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Undoing premiered on Sky Atlantic in the UK on Monday 26 October at 9pm, running for just three episodes.

It has now unfortunately finished its broadcast tenure, but the whole series is available on demand through Now TV.
