The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: why the Netflix show was cancelled - and when Season 4 is out

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has been one of the most popular series on Netflix in recent years.

Its longevity is attested to by the fact its fourth season (or ‘Part’ as Netflix has been calling them) is currently scheduled to debut later in 2020 – but there’s some bad news for fans.

Part 4 will be the last outing for Sabrina, according to reports from TVLine, who say Netflix has cancelled The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

We will at least get a chance to say goodbye with eight fresh new episodes.

Why has the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina been cancelled?

There's been no official word from Netflix on just why The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has been cancelled, and the streaming service doesn't make viewing figures publicly available.

However, the show has been well received throughout its run, both by critics and fans.

It was a spin-off of teen drama series Riverdale, and is set among the same Archie Comics universe; the news of Sabrina’s cancellation comes hot on the heels of the canning of Katy Keene, an Archie-inspired musical comedy-drama that was yet to make its way to the UK.

Sabrina showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa described working on the show as “an incredible honour from Day One” in a statement to TVLine.

“The cast, beginning with Kiernan [Shipka] as everyone’s favourite teen witch, has been an absolute joy. I am beyond thankful to the crew, writers, editors, assistants, and everyone for pouring so much love into this dark dream of a show.

"I’m also grateful to our partners at Netflix, Warner Bros., Berlanti Television and Archie Comics for letting us tell the story we wanted to tell, the way we wanted to tell it. We can’t wait for everyone to see Part Four.”

When will Part 4 be on Netflix?

No official date for when we might be able to see Part Four of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has been given, although the final instalment is expected to land before the end of 2020.

On average, there have been 228 days between each new ‘part’ of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina; adding 228 days to 24 January 2020 (the date of part 3’s Netflix debut) takes us to 8 September.

And with big releases usually debuting on a Friday, our educated guess at the start date of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Part 4 is Friday 11 September.

That’s total conjecture on our part, though.

What will happen in Part 4?

According to Netflix’s synopsis for the final eight episodes, part 4 of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will see The Eldritch Terrors “descend upon Greendale”.

“The coven must fight each terrifying threat one-by-one (The Weird, The Returned, The Darkness to name a few), all leading up to… The Void, which is the End of All Things.

"As the witches wage war, with the help of The Fright Club, Nick begins to slowly earn his way back into Sabrina’s heart, but will it be too late?”
