The new film is currently untitled, but is expected to be a direct sequel to 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, which saw British star Tom Holland, 24, reprising his role as the titular superhero.

What will happen in the new Spider-Man film?

It is rumoured that the new film will bring together three generations of Spider-Man movies.

Long before Marvel’s superhero movies were regular box office smashes, Sam Raimi’s trilogy of films really got the ball rolling on the genre in 2002.

Then, ten years later, Andrew Garfield stepped into the role for a couplet of films that remained outside of the by-then popular MCU timeline.

Following a deal between Disney and Sony (who owned the rights to the character), Spider-Man began appearing in Marvel’s interlinked series of films, though the character was given a reboot with Tom Holland pulling on the famous blue and red suit for the first time in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War.

It is believed that actors from all three ‘eras’ of Spider-Man movies will be appearing in the new film, which is rumoured to be delving into the Spider-Man ‘multiverse’, as 2018’s animated Into the Spider-Verse did.

Who will star in it?

Actor Alfred Molina has been confirmed to reprise his role as villain Doctor Octopus in the new Spider-Man film, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The British-American star, 67, appeared in Raimi’s 2004 superhero movie Spider-Man 2 as scientist Otto Octavius, who became bonded to four mechanical arms following a failed experiment.

Molina’s involvement was first rumoured last month, when he was reportedly spotted on the set of the movie, which is currently filming in New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Iceland.

Fans have expressed excitement at the announcement, with many considering Molina’s ‘Doc Ock’ to be the best villain from Spider-Man’s onscreen canon.

Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx – who played villain Electro in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – is also reportedly set to star in the new film, bringing together three generations of Spider-Man movies.

It has been rumoured multiple ‘Spider-Men’ could feature in the new film, which has a release date of December next year, and lo and behold, Tobey Maguire (who played the hero in Raimi’s trilogy) is also rumoured to appear.

Kirsten Dunst is also expected to return as MJ from the Raimi trilogy, and both Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone are thought to be reprising their roles as Peter Parker and Gwen Stacey respectively.

When asked about the rumours by US late-night chat show host Jimmy Kimmel last week, Zendaya stayed tight-lipped.

Stars of the most recent films including – Zendaya (MJ), Marisa Tomei (May Parker) AND Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds) – are all expected to return for the third movie.

Who’s directing it?

American director Jon Watts is returning for directing duties on the new film, having previously sat behind the camera on both Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home.

When can I see it?
