The Wombats, who formed in Liverpool in 2003, hit the top spot earlier this year with their latest and fifth album, Fix Yourself, Not the World. It was recorded remotely during several COVID-19 lockdowns beginning in 2020, with each band member in a different location

They have sold more than a million albums worldwide and notched up two top 20 singles - their 2006 debut, Moving To New York and the following year's Let's Dance to Joy Division.

The band met while they were students at Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts and still consists today of Matthew Murphy (lead vocals, guitar, keyboards), Tord Øverland Knudsen (bass, backing vocals, keyboards), and Dan Haggis (drums, backing vocals, keyboards).

Special Guests indie rockers Circa Waves are also from Liverpool and have released four hit albums – their latest offering, 2020’s Sad Happy, recorded their highest chart position to date at number four. The band plan to release their fifth album, Never Going Under, in January.

More Sounds of the City dates and headliners are expected to be announced following the success of the mini concert series this year - which featured Tears For Fears, Alison Moyet and BRIT award-winners Foals.

Chart-topping Californian pop rock sister trio HAIM, synth-pop singer-songwriter Georgia also played the venue during the summer.

Sounds Of The City originally launched in Manchester in 2013 and became an integral part of the music scene, with some of the most acclaimed live artists taking to the stage.

The event expanded over the Pennines this summer

The Square has established itself as one the region's top outdoor concert venues and last year also featured a now annual 80s Classical event which saw Kim Wilde, Belinda Carlisle and others perform with he symphonic might of the Opera North Orchestra,

The venue also staged Club Classical Anthems, headlined by local pop star John Newman, with performances from dance stars Ultra Nate and Black Box, along with two-time UK number one vocalist Kelli-Leigh.

One Night Under The Stars featured tributes to Queen and George Michael, while Brutus Gold’s Love Train – Open Air Summer Disco Party, followed a sell-out event in 2019 which attracted thousands of disco fans.

Millennium Square also played host to a a live outdoor performance by The Selecter, from The Specials “Original rude boy” Neville Staple band, The Chords UK, Secret Affair, The Pyramids (Symarip) and Death of Guitar Pop as part of the annual Summer Series.
