A Halloween comedy starring Adam Sandler? There’s not much scarier than that.

Which is why Netflix’s latest original movie could be the perfect so-bad-it’s-good viewing when 31 October rolls around.

Here's everything you need to know about Hubie Halloween.

What is Hubie Halloween about?

According to Netflix’s official synopsis, Hubie Halloween tells the story of Hubie Dubois, who thanklessly spends every Halloween making sure the residents of his hometown, Salem, celebrate safely and play by the rules.

But this year, an escaped criminal and a mysterious new neighbour have Hubie on high alert.

When people start disappearing, it’s up to Hubie to convince the police and townsfolk that the monsters are real, and only he can stop them.

Netflix describes the film as a “hilarious family film about an unlikely hero with an all-star cast.”

It sounds as if Netflix are trying to kick-start a trend of feelgood Halloween comedies, the kind we already expect to see around Christmas, but with a spooky twist.

Who stars in it?

As mentioned, comedy stalwart Adam Sandler is the star of the show as Hubie.

Far from his nuanced dramatic performance in the award-baiting crime thriller Uncut Gems earlier in the year (a film which also streamed exclusively through Netflix), it seems as if the actor is back to his usual comedic ways.

An acquired taste for many, the bitter Sandler pill is made slightly easier to swallow by the cast that surrounds him.

OK, so Sandler’s rubbing on screen shoulders with friend and equally divisive comic actor Kevin James (Paul Blart: Mall Cop) as police chief Sgt. Steve Downing, but elsewhere there's Ray Liotta (Goodfellas) as Mr. Landolfa, a role he’s sure to have put his Golden Globe-nominated best into.

The cast also includes Julie Bowen (Modern Family) as a character described as Hubie's “crush”, Steve Buscemi (Fargo), Maya Rudolph (Bridesmaids), and former NBA star, Shaquille O'Neal.

Who’s directed it?

The director behind the film is Steven Brill, the Golden Raspberry-winning director of such 00s comedy classics as Little Nicky and Drillbit Taylor.

Is it any good?

The critical reception to the comedy has been lukewarm at best.

The film currently holds a meager 48% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, where reviewers have called it everything from an “awful feature from start to finish”, to “the kind of movie that people will have trouble remembering exists.”

The film is 102 minutes in length.

Some critics have been slightly kinder; one called Hubie Halloween “generally entertaining enough to be harmless”, while another said the film was “too cheerfully, indifferently silly to raise much ire.”

When can I see it?

Hubie Halloween is available on Netflix now.
