Gig preview: Polo at Brudenell Social Club

Yorkshire duo Polo, comprising vocalist Kat McHugh and synth man Luke Lount, might hail from Leeds, but the pair's glacial atmospherics and lush, R&B-tinged pop are an ethereal world away from the DIY scene that the city's best known for.

Formed in 2014, the pair released hypnotic, woozily seductive debut single ‘Party Talk’ later that year and racked up performances at annual inner-city festivals Live At Leeds, Tramlines and Long Division, as well as supporting the likes of Bipolar Sunshine and Charlotte OC. 
October 2015 saw Polo return with their most instantly catchy and accomplished track to date, ‘Visions Of Fortune’. Written this spring in Leeds and Newcastle while the pair were finishing university (he at the former; her at the latter), ‘Visions Of Fortune’ was inspired by the progressive pop of Jungle and Banks alongside the more soulful undertones of Lianne La Havas. The track receieved plaudits from the likes of Noisey, Stereogum and Wonderland, who described them as the “Leeds alt-pop duo bucking their city’s trend” and praised the duo’s “sound that marries crisp, intelligent production with a lyrical edge and...McHugh’s strong vocals” that should see them “making a big impact over the next year”.

The song’s release was accompanied by their first co-headline UK shows with fellow Leeds outfit Actor. It saw them perform at six near sell-out dates.

After an Outlines festival appearance in February of 2016, March will see Polo play their first headline shows of the year, at the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds on March 8, where they intend to showcase a host of new material and give a taste of their planned exploits for this year.
