A new trailer that debuted during the Super Bowl has given fans the latest glimpse at the next film in the Fast & Furious franchise.

The latest instalment in the blockbuster franchise had been due to arrive in cinemas last year but was delayed until May due to the pandemic.

Here is everything you need to know about it.

F9 is the latest entry in the long-running Fast & Furious car chase franchise, the first mainline entry to the series since 2017, and one that serves as a direct sequel to that year’s The Fate of the Furious.

Following the events of the previous film, Dominic Toretto (a series mainstay, played by Vin Diesel) and his family must face Dominic's younger brother Jakob.

Jakob is now a deadly assassin, and not only that, he's working with Toretto’s old enemy Cipher, who holds a personal vendetta against Dominic.

The trailer includes the usual high-octane car chases fans expect from the Fast & Furious franchise, as well as cameos from a laughing Dame Helen Mirren and a winking Charlize Theron.

“The world has a way of changing, but there’s one thing that always stays the same,” Diesel says in the clip, before admitting he misses his old life “every day”.

Expect things to be even more bombastic and over the top than usual; with producers seemingly expending all of the car-based stunt work on terra firma, star Michelle Rodriguez has confirmed parts of the film will be set in outer space.

Who stars in it?

The film features a star-studded cast of returning favourites as well as new faces.

Vin Diesel returns as Dominic Toretto, former criminal and professional street racer who has retired and settled down with his wife, played once again by Michelle Rodriguez.

Tyrese Gibson and Chris "Ludacris" Bridges play Roman Pearce and Tej Parker, both members of Dom's team, with Nathalie Emmanuel returning as British computer hacktivist Megan Ramsey.

Professional wrestler John Cena also stars in the film, as the action takes place around the world, with stops in Edinburgh, London and Tokyo, as well as a secret bunker in Azerbaijan.

The film is directed by Justin Lin, who returns to the franchise having helmed 2009’s Fast & Furious, 2011’s Fast Five and 2013’s Fast & Furious 6.

Lin is also reported to have signed on to direct two more Fast & Furious films, bringing the series – which arrived in 2001 and has since grossed more than £4.2 billion at the global box office – to a close.

Fast and Furious 9 was originally scheduled to be released in cinemas in May 2020, but due to widespread cinema closures in the wake of worldwide Covid-19 lockdowns, its release was pushed back by almost a year to April 2021.

When the release date of No Time to Die – the long delayed next James Bond outing – was pushed back to the same day, F9 decided not to go up against it, and so moved itself back by another month.

Of course, Bond fans won’t get to see that film in cinemas until later this year now following another long delay, but Fast and Furious 9’s May 2021 release date is now locked in.

F9 is due to be released on Friday May 28 2021.
