Leeds has been at the centre of such movements such as Goth rock, electronic music and punk rock and remains one of the go-to places to discover new music to this day with its fantastic array of venues.

7. Scritti Politti
Starting as a punk-inspired collective of art students and squatters from Leeds, Scritti Politti went on to land chart success both locally and over in the United States with the synth-pop classic Cupid & Psyche 85, which spawned three Top 20 hits. Lead singer Green Gartside is the only member to have remained throughout the group's history.

8. The Wedding Present
Leeds-formed band The Wedding Present have long been associated with fellow melancholy indie rock group The Smiths after becoming a huge hit with NME readers during the 1980s. Their sound has taken on many guises over the years though, with band leader David Gedge expanding their influences over the years.

9. Apollo Junction
Apollo Junction have been plugging away at their craft for a good decade in Leeds and have built up dedicated following, who have packed out venues across the city for their synth-tinged blend of Brit pop.

10. Utah Saints
Although formed in Harrogate in 1991, Utah Saints were based in Leeds and heavily influenced by the sound of the Prodigy. Throughout the 1990s they had three top ten singles and another five in the top 40 on the UK Singles Chart, including the Kate Bush-sampled Something Good.

11. Alt-J
Mercury Music Price winners Alt-J were formed while its original four members were studying at the University of Leeds. Their unique blend of indie, folk and electronic music has made them something of a love/hate band.

12. Soft Cell
Marc Almond and Dave Ball formed Soft Cell out of Leeds's underground punk scene in the early 1980s and went on to have huge global success with their cover of 'Tainted Love'. They had a total of 12 top 40 hits and have sold over 10 million albums to date.
