Yorkshire Carnegie 50 Moseley 3: Burdon is lifted as Carnegie run amok

This performance was a lot more comfortable than their defeat of Moseley in the Championship seven days earlier, as Carnegie cruised through the gears, running in eight tries in a comprehensive rout.

In the aftermath of victory, Carnegie head coach Bryan Redpath – whose priority this season is securing Carnegie’s promotion to the Premiership – showed his sympathetic side.

“It was tough for Moseley, they picked up a few bumps last weekend and had to put some of their coaching staff on the bench, so it was a tough shift from them,” said the Scot.

“I thought the first 20 minutes they were outstanding and we had to defend a lot and we didn’t execute very well in the first half, but after that when we got our noses in front we had a little bit too much for them.

“I was delighted with the boys in the second half, certainly that last 60 minutes, from then on we were pretty comfortable and we just had to make sure we stuck to the simple things and what was pleasing was that we scored some simple tries and didn’t over complicate it.”

After falling behind to a penalty from their former player Glyn Hughes, Carnegie took charge with Forsyth sprinting 40 metres for the opening try.

Scrum-half Chris Pilgrim scored from a quick-tap penalty before Oli Goss got his first of the season and Forsyth scored his second of the day.

Two quick scores from England Under-20s international Taylor Prell put the result beyond doubt after half-time

The fixture also saw a welcome return for 26-year-old centre Fred Burdon from the replacements bench.

Burdon had been out for 18 months with a succession of Achilles injuries and he set Walker away for the first of his two late scores.

“It felt awesome, I couldn’t have asked for a better day,” said Burdon.

“The lads played really well and everyone has been so welcoming in getting me back in and I really enjoyed it.

“A year ago playing rugby at Headingley Carnegie did seem a long way off but a lot of people have helped me; Jon Power, Steve Humphries and the conditioners, Shane Carney, Ryan Clayton and Blackie.

“Loads of people have helped me and put so much effort in with me and I am so grateful for that as it allows me to do what I love – play rugby.”
