WARRINGTON WOLVES are determined to take a leaf out of Leeds Rhinos' book this season.

The sides meet at Halliwell Jones Stadium in Betfred Super League round one tonight and Warrington are on a similar path to the one Leeds followed in 2016/17.

The year after winning the treble, Rhinos plunged down the table and eventually finished ninth. Warrington were league leaders that season, but ended last year in the same place as Leeds 12 months earlier. They have seen how Rhinos bounced back, by climbing to second in the table and lifting the Super League trophy and that will be an inspiration this term.

“They have definitely shown it’s possible,” Wolves’ England forward Ben Currie observed. “Hopefully we can do what they did last year. Our main goal is to go for all silverware this year.”

A win tonight would show Warrington mean business and Currie insisted: “There’s no better way for us to start.

“We will get to test ourselves against the champions and that’s what you want.

“We will really see where we are this year for round one – we will see if we are up there and where we need to improve.

“If we can get a win against the champions it will kick-start the year.

“They are a quality side and we are looking forward to it.”

Two former Warrington players will be making their Rhinos debut tonight.

“That will be interesting,” Currie said.

“Obviously Richie Myler left a few years ago, but Brad Dwyer was with us last year and I have played with him since I was a kid. It will be different seeing him on the opposite side, but it’ll be good.

“He gives them something different, he is fast and elusive out of dummy-half and he will be really good for them off the bench.

“He will suit their style of play.”
