Wakefield Wildcats 62 Wigan Warriors 0: Coach Chester proud of his players' '˜exceptional' performances

Wakefield were bottom of First Utility Super League before Easter, but have won all four of their games since Chester officially took charge and are up to ninth.

They produced possibly the finest performance in their Super League history yesterday to crush visitors Wigan Warriors 62-0.

And Chester said afterwards: “I thought it was going to be a lot closer.

“I know they are struggling with injuries and they’ve had a bug go through the camp, but I certainly wasn’t expecting that scoreline. But it just shows what a bit of belief does to a group of players.

“From one to 17 they were outstanding. We scored some fantastic tries and I thought our execution was very good, but what pleased me was what they did without the ball.

“To keep a Wigan side to zero points takes some special efforts and there were lots of special efforts out there.”

Wigan received three penalties on Wakefield’s line in the final moments, but the home team refused to allow them through.

“It’s just desire and players not wanting to let their team-mates down,” Chester said.

“That has been evident these last three weeks. They are starting to believe in themselves a little bit more. I am really pleased, it has been a good few weeks, but we need to make sure we keep grounded.

“We are a confident side at this moment in time and we are enjoying the journey.”

Chester added: “I thought we started the second half a bit slowly and we came up with some silly errors.

“But we scored some fancy tries and, for me, that’s the best team performance in a long, long time in Super League.

“I thought what we did was exceptional and I am proud of everybody involved.”

Stand-off Jacob Miller led the way with a hat-trick and Chester said: “He has always been a fantastic talent.

“He has copped a fair bit of criticism over the years, but he is playing with a lot of confidence. He is a spark in our team and with him and Liam Finn we have got a really good partnership.”
