Wakefield Trinity v Catalans Dragons: Home coach demands fewer errors

Boss Chris Chester wants Wakefield Trinity to keep things simple at home to Catalans Dragons on Sunday - and slash their error rate.

Both teams made a dismal start to the Betfred Super League season last week - Trinity going down 30-12 at Hull KR and Catalans suffering a 32-12 home defeat by Huddersfield Giants.

That makes round two an important game even at this early stage and Chester admitted: “Everybody was really disappointed with the performance last week and the errors.”

He stressed: “Sixteen in one game is a ridiculous amount of errors to make and I would probably say 90 per cent of those were players not under any kind of pressure.

“We just had to do too much defending because of lack of ball control. That is the big thing we need to get back.

“More than anything it is about simplifying what we do out on the field and make sure we don’t make the same mistakes this weekend.”

Trinity won’t try to take on Catalans at their own game.

“They are a big side,” Chester noted of the French team.

“They have got some big human beings in the middle of the park and we have got to try and contain those big middles.

“We don’t want to play a big team through the middle, we will try and move the big blokes around. We might get an edge that way.

“We just need to make sure we learn from our mistakes last week and improve.

“Hopefully we can get our home season off to a positive start.”

Trinity are without Danny Brough who suffered a knee injury at Hull KR.

Ryan Hampshire is set to switch to scrum-half with Max Jowitt coming into the side at full-back.

Other players in contention who did not feature last week are James Batchelor, Joe Arundel, Lee Kershaw and Connor Bailey.

Catalans coach Steve McNamara has not included controversial signing Israel Folau in his 21.

Lucas Albert, Paul Seguier, Arthur Mourgue, Gavin Marguerite and Antoni Maria are vying for a call-up, but David Mead drops out.
