The 28-year-old will be on loan from Toronto Wolfpack for the rest of this year before starting a two-year contract.

Kay scored seven tries from five appearances for Trinity during the 2012 and 2013 seasons, including a hat-trick against Castleford Tigers in his final game for the club.

He joined Leigh Centurions and was Toronto Wolfpack’s first signing ahead of their 2017 entry into League One.

Kay, who has a career record of 147 tries in 156 first-team appearances, told Trinity’s website: “I’m over the moon to be joining Wakefield, the place where I got handed my Super League debut.

“I think the club itself has developed in leaps and bounds since the last time I was there so I’m really looking forward to getting back and getting stuck in.”

Wakefield boss Chris Chester reckons Kay will add to competition for places in the outside-backs.

“I’m delighted we’ve got Liam at the club,” Chester said.

“You only have to look at his prolific record to realise he knows where the tryline is and I think he’ll really push the likes of Tom Johnstone, Ben Jones-Bishop and Lee Kershaw in his position.”

Kay, who also had a spell on loan at Doncaster in 2013, could make his second debut when Wakefield take on St Helens at Emerald Headingley in their first game following the coronavirus shutdown, on Sunday, August 16.

“He has been at the club before, so he obviously knows what we’re about at Wakefield and I’m sure he’s looking forward to starting training with the boys next week,” Chester added.

In a statement, Toronto boss Brian McDermott said: “While the fans will remember Liam for his incredible strike rate for games played and tries scored, everyone inside the Wolfpack bubble will also remember his commitment to the cause for the first-ever transatlantic professional sports team.

“We all wish Liam well and I’m sure I speak for everyone in expressing our gratitude for his efforts over the last four years.”

Kay, who is from Leeds, scored Wolfpack’s first Super League try in the round-one loss to Castleford at Headingley five months ago.
