Wakefield Trinity dominate Championship awards shortlist

Trinity have four nominees for the three honours, including full-back Max Jowitt and forward Ky Rodwell who are in contention to be named player of the year. Twenty-year-old centre Oliver Pratt is a contender as young player of the year and Daryl Powell, whose side finished 13 points clear of second placed Toulouse Olympique on the league table, is in the running for the coach’s award.
York Knights, who finished fourth in the table and host Widnes Vikings in an elimination play-off this weekend, also have a nominee in each of the three categories. Former Castleford Tigers and Leeds Rhinos forward Jordan Thompson is on the player of the year shortlist, outside-back Brad Ward is in contention for young player and ex-Trinity boss Mark Applegarth is up for the coaching honour.

Toulouse have two nominations with Sylvain Houles on the coach shortlist and Anthony Marion in contention for player of the year. The third nominee for young player is Bradford Bulls’ Jayden Myers. Bulls finished third in the table and host Featherstone Rovers on Sunday in the second elimination play-off.
The nominees and winners are decided by a poll of coaches at the 14 Championship clubs. Winners will be announced on Tuesday at the sport’s presentation evening in Leeds. Meanwhile, Trinity’s attendance boom has driven a rise in average crowds across the Championship. Trinity averaged 5,628 fans at their 13 home games, a 30 per cent increase on their average in Super League last season and the club’s best since 2013. The division’s average was up by seven per cent to 2,046, which is the best for five seasons,
