Trinity were one of the clubs who voted not to readmit the Canadian side to the competition in 2021, after they withdrew during the coronavirus shutdown.

“I feel sorry for the players who’ve not been paid for so many months,” Chester said of Wolfpack's top-flight demise after just half a season in Super League.

“There’s players who’ve not been paid for the last six or seven months and I feel sorry for the fans and the organisation as a whole.

“It has been really poorly managed.

“I feel sorry for Brian McDermott, a great coach, a great guy and I am pretty sure Brian will find something sooner rather than later.

“I just think it has been a really sorry affair and it all comes down to the guy who ran the club.”

Clubs have been invited to apply to become the 12th team in the competition next season, but Chester insisted: “I’m not really bothered who comes up.”

He said: “There’s obviously some good Championship clubs there. I’d like to see maybe a York or a London or one of those clubs that are really working hard behind the scenes.

“I know Toulouse has been mentioned and a couple of others, but you just have to put your faith in those people who are making that decision.”
