Wakefield Trinity boss 'frustrated' by uncertainty over Super League start date

Uncertainty over when Betfred Super League will start is making pre-season planning difficult, Wakefield Trinity coach Chris Chester admits.

The new campaign is due to kick off on March 11, but a delay seems likely because of the continuing pandemic.

The season has already been put back from its regular late January/early February start because of the late finish to the 2020 campaign.

Trinity trained either side of Christmas, with pre-season proper beginning last week.

Usually, pre-season starts in November, but is broken up by time off over Christmas.

Chester conceded: “The frustrating part is not knowing when we’ll be playing the first game.

“We planned an eight-week pre-season and then we are into it. Now it’s looking like it’s going to be a little bit longer, an extra two weeks, so we have got to reassess the pre-season and reschedule a few things.

“We will have to look at potentially giving them some little blocks of time off. A 12-week pre-season without a break is kind of unheard of.

“It is important we keep these guys as fresh as we possibly can for the start of the year, not just physically but in the mind as well. We will reassess once we know the start date of the 2021 season.”

Chester is hoping for one warm-up game, but said another might be arranged if the start date is put back.
