The league was reduced to 11 when Toronto Wolfpack withdrew in July. Clubs on Monday voted not to readmit the Canadian side next year, but a meeting yesterday unanimously agreed to run with 12 teams, playing a 27-round regular season including the Dacia Magic Weekend.

Rovers chairman Mark Campbell issued a statement before the latest meeting insisting his club has “earned the right to be the 12th team in the 2021 Super League season”.

Toulouse Olympique, London Broncos and York City Knights are also likely to be in the running.

A Super League statement said: “The process for including the 12th team will begin promptly and the decision will be made by a committee headed by an independent chairman, who will be identified shortly.

“Further details on the criteria that applicant clubs will have to meet will be discussed and released at an appropriate time.”

Super League executive chairman Robert Elstone added: “We are committed to ensuring that the process is independent and impartial and stands up to scrutiny. Accordingly, ensuring the committee is properly constituted and clearly mandated is our first priority.”
