Rob Burrow - why I won't be at Wembley

Leeds Rhinos legend Rob Burrow has decided not to travel to Wembley for next weekend's Coral Challenge Cup final.

Burrow, a Challenge Cup winner with Leeds in 2014 and 2015, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease last December.

Rhinos and the Rugby Football League (RFL) had invited him to the final, which will be played behind closed doors, in seven days’ time, but Burrow has decided to stay at home and cheer Rhinos on against Salford Red Devils from his living room.

There had been calls on social media for the 38-year-old former scrum-half to lead the Rhinos team on to the field, or present the trophy to the winning captain.

But coronavirus restrictions at Wembley mean the traditional trophy presentation will not take place.

Instead, to maintain social distancing, the winning captain will be invited to collect the coveted prize from a pedestal placed on the pitch at the end of the game.

Burrow said: “I would like to thank the club and the RFL for all the support they have offered me and the kind invitation to be part of the Challenge Cup final.

“However, I’ve decided to stay and watch the game at home, like millions of other rugby league fans around the country, with my family.

“I would like to wish both teams the best of luck for a special day.”

Rhinos director of rugby Kevin Sinfield said: “Having spoken with Rob and his wife Lindsey, I know it has been overwhelming to see the support Rob and his family have had from the general public in recent weeks , especially with everything else that is going on in people’s lives.

“I know from having played alongside him that playing in the Challenge Cup final and running out at Wembley was one of the biggest highlights of his career and he hopes everyone saviours the moment despite the fact fans can not be there.

“Rob is anticipating a fantastic final and looking forward to sitting down with his kids to enjoy it.”

Burrow was among the try scorers when Rhinos crushed Hull KR 50-0 on their most recent visit to Wembley, five years ago.
