Richie Myler focusing on Leeds Rhinos following Toronto Wolfpack link

As reported in the Yorkshire Evening Post yesterday, Myler is set to join Toronto Wolfpack next season.

The 30-year-old’s Rhinos contract expires this autumn and Wolfpack are understood to have offered him an opportunity to play in his favoured half-back role.

The transfer has not been confirmed by either club, but Rhinos expect Myler - who was Leeds’ player of the year during his first season with them, in 2018 - to make the move.

Myler lost his number seven jersey to new signing Luke Gale ahead of this season and was a substitute - mainly at hooker - in Rhinos’ first four Super League games.

He started, at full-back in place of the injured Jack Walker, in their final match before the Covid-19 shutdown, a 66-12 win over Toronto.

The former Widnes, Salford, Warrington and Catalans man - who has been capped eight times by England - declined to comment on his future.

He said: “All I can say at the moment is that I am loving being a Leeds player and can’t wait to get back into work and see the boys.”

Rhinos captain Stevie Ward is poised to make the same move - also on a long-term deal - after his contract at Leeds ends on November 30.

When the transfers are completed they will strengthen a growing connection between Leeds and the Canadian club, who are coached by former Rhinos boss Brian McDermott.

His assistant at Leeds, Chris Plume, joined Toronto’s coaching staff last year and forward Anthony Mullally - a Super League champion with Rhinos in 2017 - played in the 2019 promotion-clinching Championship Grand Final win over Featherstone Rovers.

Fellow prop Brad Singleton signed for Wolfpack in the off-season and ex-Leeds captain Kallum Watkins joined them in May on a three-year deal following a short stint in Australia with Gold Coast Titans.

Toronto are also keen to bring former Rhinos winger Ryan Hall back to Super League when his contract with Sydney Roosters expires at the end of the current NRL season.
