Richard Agar ‘disappointed’ as Alex Sutcliffe looks set to move on from Leeds Rhinos

LEEDS RHINOS coach Richard Agar admits he will be disappointed to lose Alex Sutcliffe if, as expected, the Wembley winner signs for Castleford Tigers.

Sutcliffe, 22, was a member of last year’s Challenge Cup-winning side and was voted Rhinos’ Shooting Star by Evening Post readers.

He is out of contract at the end of this season and has turned down the deal offered by Leeds, in order to sign for another club.

Nothing has been confirmed, but incoming Tigers coach Lee Radford, who will take charge in the off-season, is understood to be keen to make Sutcliffe one of his first signings.

Sutcliffe – a strong defender who can play at centre or in the second-row – featured in Rhinos’ first five games this year, but has been sidelined since suffering an injury, which required surgery, against Hull KR more than a month ago.

Agar said: “I would be disappointed to lose him. I have made no secret of the fact I like him as a player, I’ve given him plenty of opportunity and I saw him as a valuable part of the squad.”

But Agar added: “When you are a developing club and you put a lot of time and effort and money into developing your own, occasionally you do lose one or two along the way.

“That’s just a fact of life.”
