Peter Smith's Tour Diary: Pats on the back all round ... and a special '˜thanks' to the coach (driver)

SO, A 21,000 mile round trip in little more than a week and a hefty defeat '“ was it worthwhile?

Yes, is the universal feeling in Rhinos’ camp. World Club Challenge gameday was tough. Already up against it, Rhinos picked up a couple of injures which will deprive them of key players for the trip to Widnes Vikings in six days’ time.

The scoreline was harsh on Leeds, but they didn’t play particularly badly and were beaten by an exceptional team. They had chance to get away together as a unit and work on some things in better conditions than at home.

Rhinos won their opening two Betfred Super League games so the trip wasn’t a distraction beforehand and if they lose at Widnes, that’s no surprise – they have been beaten on each of their past three visits.

It’s doubtful any of the Leeds fans who made the trip – at short notice and great expense – wish they had stayed at home. They were heavily outnumbered, but made themselves heard. The players genuinely appreciated the support.

Melbourne is a lovely city and Storm are a good and welcoming club. By agreeing to this adventure, Rhinos have kept the World Club Challenge concept alive and maybe other Super League sides will fancy having a go in future seasons.

Rhinos’ players and backroom staff flew home in various groups on Saturday and Sunday.

Spare a thought for Fourways coach driver Pete who collected the staff group from Manchester Airport yesterday lunchtime, then turned around and went straight back for players who arrived three hours later.
