New signing Trent Merrin targets honours with Leeds Rhinos

The 29-year-old former Australia Test prop is Rhinos’ fourth addition ahead of the 2019 season, after centre Konrad Hurrell and half-backs Tui Lolohea and Callum McLelland.

Both Hurrell and Merrin are marquee signings which means part of their wage is exempt from the salary cap.

“I have spent a bit of time with Konny and he is a champion,” Merrin said of his fellow recruit.

“He is going to bring a lot to the team and the community. He’s someone I am excited to play alongside.

“The same with Tui. he has definitely done some great things in the NRL and I know what he’s capable of doing here.

“To get players like that at the club goes to show what they are building towards and I am very excited to get some success with those players and the rest of the squad.”

Penrith’s executive general manager Phil Gould has given Merrin a glowing reference.

“He has given our club three years of outstanding service, both on and off the field,” Gould said.

“Apart from the tremendous football he has played, Trent has been instrumental in mentoring the careers of a number of our young players. We wish Trent well with his new challenge in the English Super League. Leeds has secured itself a very good man.”
